The novel Hong on the Range is Bill's satire of westerns and cyborg science
fiction, and at the same time is his homage to the work of western author
Dorothy M. Johnson and many of his favorite western movies, stories, and
characters, both fictional and historical. Like most of those westerns, Hong
on the Range is acceptable for readers of all ages; he has received positive
reader feedback from adults and young people, including parents who read it
to young children.
"You can tell what kind of word play to expect from the title," Bill
says. "It's full of satire and pastiches of many kinds, and different sorts
of word play as well as having colorful characters and an interwoven plot."
He based this light and playful serio-comedy on his Hugo and Nebula Award
nominee, the short story "Hong's Bluff."
Hong on the Range (Walker and Co., 1989) was also hailed by literary
critics, chosen for the Wilson Library Bulletin's list of science fiction
"Books Too Good to Miss, 1980 -1989," and was a 1990 selection for the
American Library Association list of Best Books for Young People, for the New
York Public Library's recommended Books for the Teen Age, and a Young Adult
Editor's Choice by Booklist Magazine.
Film rights have been optioned by Matinee Entertainment Productions.
